Ever since radio disk jockey Don Imus called the Rutger’s women’s basketball team “nappy headed ho’s”, he has become a media obsession. Every news channel’s main story has been the Imus scandal.
Activist Al Sharpton has called for him to be fired, and fired he was after several sponsors dropped their ads. First MSNBC fired him from his morning program, then CBS radio fired him more so because he would not be able to make them big profits since all the sponsors pulled out more so than for his racial and sexist comment.
Imus however is being crucified and being the scapegoat for his comment. Much, much worse derogatory comments are said all day, every day all over TV such as MTV and BET as well as all over the radio.
Regular DJ’s on mainstream radio on the top 100 music channels all over the country refer to regular women as ho’s and bitches every single day. Several black activists and leaders are angry at the way blacks are stereotyped and portrayed everyday in the hip hop music and videos. The rappers and hip hop artists, as well as the white corporate men are profiting millions of dollars at the expense of blacks. There is also a rap group that calls themselves “Nappy Roots”. Some parents complain quietly amongst themselves, but there has never been a major scandal and controversey over the current culture like the Don Imus scandal.
Even Snoop Dog, a millionaire successful black rapper has made racist comments against his own people and sexist comments against women. Asked why he was allowed to say nigga’s and ho’s and Don Imus wasn’t, Snoop basically said that Imus had called college athletes ho’s which is wrong, while Snoop is calling black women in the ‘hood who are not in college ho’s (which is OK). So that means any black woman who does not go to college is a ho?
Paris Hilton was caught on video referring to blacks as niggers, but Al Sharpton never made a fuss over that, nor called for a boycott of The Hilton Hotel, nor for Paris’ show “The Simple Life” to be removed from TV. If Al Sharpton had been upset over Paris’ racial slurs, advertisers would have probably pulled out of her show too, until the TV execs pulled it.
So, what exactly are the unwritten rules? Will somebody write them down? They are quiet confusing. Why is it ok for say, Paris Hilton to call blacks nigger’s, ok for Snoop to hate on black women who don’t go to college, ok for tons of other dj’s and people in mainstream media such as top 100 radio stations and MTV to be sexist and racist, but for Don Imus it is a fatal mistake?
Can someone make a list of who is allowed to make these kind of comments and who will get crucified for it?
